There is no question it is slowing it down.  Google made a $4 billion bid to 
purchase Nortel's patents and made a deal with IBM to purchase 1000 patents 
[1].  It doesn't take much thinking to conclude that Google could have easily 
spent all that money on R & D instead of purchasing patents solely for the 
purpose of defending itself in patent litigation.
