I can't think of a finer example than the Google/Motorola deal to illustrate 
how software patents are harmful to innovation.  

$12,500,000,000.00 spent to essentially purchase 24,500 patents instead of 
spending it on R & D.  That comes to about $510,000 per patent.  Wow.  What 
could you create with 12.5 billion dollars?
