Your expectations and needs may vary depending on who and what moves with you (sounds as if that is going to be part of your evaluation). Ten years ago I bicycled to work quite comfortably, year round (San Jose to Los Gatos and later San Jose to Santa Clara) in both cases it was a 25 minute commute unless I picked up a flat. My advice is to get the employment location worked out first. Make use of your social network to ensure your compensation package is appropriate for Bay Area cost of living. obviously. Cost of living is so much higher, it can be easy to underestimate your expected Bay Area Salary. Use Google Maps travel times to set up a 30 minute radius and begin looking inside that range for housing that would meet your needs. You may need to adjust the 30 minute travel budget based on finances, school and daycare, and housing prices, but it gives an excellent starting point.
