Or perhaps this is a Netbeans issue? I've often felt that Netbeans was only one step up from a text editor so maybe the issue is more prevalent there.
NetBeans - which is not just one step up from a text editor :-) - formats as the other IDEs and even offers some integration with properly configured Maven projects with CheckStyle settings (which is a very good way to enforce formatting rules in a team).
I don't remember the details of Tor's statement, but of course no IDE would do things autonomously and the user can do bad things. I suppose Tor was referring to common bad practices and not tools.
