Just a few decades ago, there was rampant sexism, discrimination based on color, racism against immigrants or motivated by sexual orientation, factory workers being exploited and barred from joining unions, terrible work conditions, religion poisoning the minds of entire countries and holding back progress and the absence of radio, television and the Internet keeping most of the population in total ignorance of what's going on around them. Go back further and you'll find slavery.
