When I wrote the first edition of Java I/O about six years ago, I
included a chapter on talking to serial and parallel ports from Java. In
that chapter I complained about the lack of support for more modern
interfaces like USB and Firewire. Well, Firewire is still MIA, but USB
isn't; and thus I'm very pleased to announce the release of the second
edition of Java I/O from O'Reilly. Assorted details like table of
contents, what's new, etc. can be found here:

However what's of special interest to this list is Chapter 23 which is a
38 page introduction to USB and the Java USB API. Several members of
this list were instrumental in helping me to figure out the material
you'll find there. Thanks!
Besides laying out the general architecture and design of USB, the
chapter builds up several examples of using the USB API, The final
examples demonstrates talking to a USB-connected temperature probe (i.e.
a laboratory thermometer). The examples from that chapter are all online
here:

If you're interested, the book is now available online on Safari, and at
Amazon and other bookstore that carry O'Reilly books:

Comments and criticisms are appreciated.
