That didn't really answer the question...when you add the jarfiles to your CLASSPATH directly, *what happens*?
In any case, it sounds like you are not using the jre that you put the jar files into. If you want to use the jre at /usr/java/jdk1.5.0_16/jre/bin/java you have to put the actual path where the actual "java" program is, not just /usr/java/jdk1.5.0_16, into your PATH.
