Hello Pete this is Randy Johnson a Division 1 thrower from Southeast
Missouri State. My P.R. is 67.74m and am also a senior is a similar
delemma. I'm also a senior with a few meets left. I've thrown 66.12 so far
but need 67.00m for provisional but will take about 68m to make it to
nationals. Since it's too late to gain strength this late in the season,
your best bet is to "hit the point" of the spear better. This alone will
most likely give you more feet. Make sure you hold your arm nice and high.
Have your elbow above your shoulder, and your hand above your elbow. It is
so important not to lose the tip as you throw. Keep the tip beside you eye
or even touching your cheek in your perhiferial vision while your arm is
high. Throw from this position and you may find the javelin will fly much
further on much less effort. This is one aspect I'm working on because if
you lose the tip and it goes up as you throw, this means the tail is
dragging causing wind resistance which kills the throw at the end. Hitting
the point will allow the spear to leave your hand with a much greater
velocity. Also, do not try to put height on the javelin with your arm. The
jav will fly best when it is released almost parrallel to the ground. Your
block is what gives the spear its height. Try throwing lower. Best of luck
to you. When I hit the point in practice and it goes 70m, the javelin looks
like a little dot in the sky for a second. This is because it's in line and
I've hit the point. Let me know how you do.. Go do it! Explode

Randy Johnson
