Hi Donny,
While I agree with Bob that you can do this with the stand by mode and
adding a password to it to resume, there are some things that you might want
to consider...
First, I should advise you that both the screen saver password and the stand
by password are pretty easy to circumnavigate, meaning they can be bypassed
with a few keystrokes, but seeing as how you are not doing this for security
sake and your family may not have the technical know how to accomplish the
bypass, then you should have no problems.
Secondly, if you want to keep your computer on, that is, if you find
yourself downloading something large that will take some time, and you want
to leave your computer for a bit, you'll find that the stand by mode will
cut off the download once it goes into the stand by mode, so, depending on
why you leave your computer sitting there with the power on, then you may
want to use my suggestion of setting a screen saver password.
Lastly, you should have, at least, one or the other turned on, with or
without the password function, as you will find that your screen will be
subjected to screen burn, and while that may not make a difference to you if
you are totally blind, if you are a partial or you find that your family
uses the computer too, it may hurt their eyes to strain at looking at the
screen through the burn. So, if you have any sensitivity to their needs or
yours, I would recommend you set up either a stand by mode or a screen
saver.
With all of that in mind, here are the steps to set up a screen saver and
setting it with a password.
1. Go to the start menu and into your settings then control panel. Once
there, enter on display.
2. Control tab to the screen saver tab and listen to what your screen saver
is set to.
Since you do not have this enabled, it should read none.
3. Choose a screen saver to utilize. I have mine set to a blank screen
saver, which turns the computer screen blank, but you can choose any screen
saver you wish.
4. If you choose the blank screen saver, you'll find that you get an error
when you press the screen saver settings button, this is normal, however, if
you want to make some changes to the other screen savers you have, for
example, there is a screen saver called Marquis or scrolling marquis. You
can go into the screen saver settings button and it will let you type what
you want the computer to display and how fast it should scroll or move
around the screen. As a joke, you may want to type in, "Don't mess with my
computer settings...Wife and Son!!" Get my drift?
5. Once you've chosen the screen saver you want, and you've tweaked the
settings, tab over to the wait edit field and arrow up and down to the
desired number of minutes the computer should wait to activate the screen
saver.
6. Tab once more to a check box that says, "On Resume, Password Protect" and
make sure it's checked.
One note about this process...
Once you check this check box, when it resumes activity, in other words,
when you want to return to the desktop or application you are using, it will
ask you for the password that you have on log on.
For example, if you have a password associated with your account, which, I'm
assuming you do, since you have multiple accounts on your computer, and if
you don't, go ahead and make one, it will be the same password for resuming
out of screen saver.
It used to be a great deal easier with Windows 98, as you could set
different passwords for different things, like stand by, log on and screen
saver, but I guess all of that has changed because I guess people found it
hard to remember the different passwords for each thing.
Anyway, let me know if you don't have a password associated with your
account and I'll walk you through setting one up.
Victor
