To expand the collapsed messages, use the RIGHT ARROW key on the first message. You can also set things so that the messages are _not_ collapsed by default in Tools>Options. Go to the View page and check the item labeled Automatically Expand Grouped Messages. Then, you can continue to group messages together by subject, but you will see all of the messages without having them collapsed. You will have to continue to have your messages grouped, meaning that you don't want to uncheck that item as per an earlier message.

I have gone through my menus, the View menu in particular but don't see where to disable this feature. I don't have much in the way of toolbars and never use them but don't see anything there either. I suspect this is one of those Windows XP Pro random settings features for those of us perceived to have nothing else to do but play with our computers all day but I cannot say for sure.
