I hope this problem will not occur again. Here are my suggestions:
    1. It's not a bad idea to make a shortcut to the folder containing this
file. I say shortcut to the folder because  if you hide the system files
you'd not be able to see the file. Also you may coppy normal.dot to another 
place
and if it happens again just to replace the original file with the coppy. I
think the first method is the eaziest.
    2. When making changes in the font dialogue never press the default
button if you don't want to solve this problem again. If you need formatting
different than the default and wish to use it often, make the changes you
want and save it as a template.
    3. Keep the instructions that helped you.

Thanks to all of you who helped me get Word XP working
correctly at least for the moment.
My next question is, how do I keep this from occurring in
the future? Finding and deleting that normal template turned
into a semester project. At one point I even thought about
attempting to set up a hot-key for it if this is going to be
a regular thing. Again, thanks for all of your help.
