Hello, I also have a laptop, and there is, in your system tray, or should be, a way to double click on the touch pad, mine is called synaptics pointing device. Then control tab to the device settings page and uncheck it, then tab to okay and space. If you need to reenable it, it's very easy. Just go back to the same place and re enable it. I have mine off most of the time, but when I need help with something, I turn it back on.

I might be wrong with which function key you press though. Give it a try. If you still have no luck, let me know and I will try and get a family member to check my documentation again for you.
