Unfortunately, the directions Flore provided were missing a step or 2. Other than that, they were right on. Here's the part that was left out.
Before attempting to read the status line using the Jaws + Page Down or number pad 3, go to the View menu and make sure that your Status Bar is turned on by pressing B. After that, the directions work just fine. My thanks to David for helping me to find the problem.
