I know that I am replying to my own message, but there are a few things I forgot to mention. The quick way to get to the layout dialog in the view menu is to go into the menu and press the letter l which will take you into the Window Layout dialog. You will land under the layout tab, on the checkbox which says "contacts." Check this box, and tab until you land on the apply button and press it. Then, you can just close the dialog.
