What you are talking about changes from one internet provider to another and most of them now force you to send through their smtp server in order to send mail. For example, I'm on ATT yahoo and even on my yahoo account I have to use smtp.sbcglobal.net to send something from the yahoo account. really it don't matter because it's still saying that it's from the other account when the person uses it. I know this isn't any help, but maybe it will help to understand things a little better. And yes, this is done to prevent spamming.
