I am replying to this thread with no particular previous comment in mind,
but I felt this thread would serve as an appropriate "ice breaker" for what
I want to mention.

I've noticed on several lists that someone will reply to a message with no
context to frame the reply. I've been guilty of this myself from time to
time and I always feel like giving myself a well placed boot in the rear
when I go into my "Sent Items" folder and re-read the message/reply I sent.
I say to myself, "Self, how can you expect anybody on the list to grasp your
reply when there's no reference to the message that prompted this reply?"

And of course, I answer to myself, "Self, you fool, folks will have to be
mind readers to understand what you just replied to cuz there ain't nothin'
here to give 'em any clues!"

Certainly, there are some replies that are obvious answers to questions
posed in a previous message in the thread, but there are times when a reply
is far to terse and gives no hint to what is being addressed. Hence, I will
preclude my reply with something akin to:

"David Ferron writes: (with a brief abstract of the prompting thought)"
(minus the quotation marks naturally and usually it's somebody else and not
our hard-working group owner! But I suspect you all get the idea, if you're
replying to a specific point or question in the thread it's wise to remind
us of the initiating point or question so those of us that are handicapped
in the art of mind reading will have a better understanding of your reply!
