Hi,

Go back to tool/options and on the general page tab to make sure that box, 
send/receive at startup is checked.
Below is how mine is set..
Options
Spelling Security Connection Maintenance
General Read Receipts Send Compose Signatures
General
When starting, go directly to my 'Inbox' folder*checked
Notify me if there are any new newsgroups*not checked
Automatically display folders with unread messages*checked
Automatically log on to Windows Messenger*not checked
Send / Receive Messages*checked
Play sound when new messages arrive*checked
Send and receive messages at startup*checked
Check for new messages every 5 minute(s)*edit the amount you want here or 
leave the default at 30
If my computer is not connected at this time:
Connect even when working offline
Default Messaging Programs
This application is the default Mail handler Make Default
This application is the default News handler Make Default
OK Cancel Apply
