I'm only sitting at a windows 98 computer now, but I remember a few of the
changes I made in windows xp while I had it.
I'm pretty sure that everything is still the same as in 2004, so follow the
advice from the post.
I've got a few gripes about the post, though...
Why bliss?
Why do we have to arrange our folders by name?
For best results, go with no background.
And choose whatever arrangement you want: name, size, type, modified, etc.
If you're picky about the way items appear in Explorer/my computer, choose the
menu item that says to, well, choose details.
You land in a list of checkboxes.
The reason that there are so many boxes in this list is because there are many
details that can be shown/hidden from view.
Things like audio, pictures, videos, etc.
The checkboxes turn the columns on or off.
The up and down buttons move the order of the columns around.
To use them, highlight a name and then press either the up button or the down
button to move that column heading up or down.
Also, do not forget to choose either list or details from the main view menu.
No one here really likes icon views anyway, like me.
And if you're not fond of Windows sorting things the way it thinks they should
be, clear the auto arrange option wherever it
appears.
Also, there's a customize button for both the modern and classic start menus.
Press the button for either the classic or modern start menu (whichever you
prefer) and look for a preference that says something
about using personalized menus.
Two words, well, three: turn it off!
This keeps all of your menu items available like they were for win95/98/me.
Leaving it on tells Windows to hide the menu items you do not use frequently.
Also, some of you, like me, prefer expanding menus (submenus) as opposed to new
windows.
Look for any references about expanding items and turn the ones that you want
to expand (control panel, network, printers and faxes)
on.
The following items of interest only apply to the modern start menu
customization dialog box.
In here, you can choose how many frequently used program icons appear in the
main start menu (in addition to internet, email, and a
few others).
The most you can have at one time is 30, but even I wouldn't go that high.
Maybe 9 sounds like a good choice.
There is also a preference saying something about highlighting newly installed
programs.
No, thanks, xp.
You can also choose to enable balloon tips.
You really might want this on so that Jaws can announce little extra info as it
comes up.
You can also choose whether the internet or email items appear, as well as
which program carries out each of the tasks.
A little lengthy by my standards, but that's as much as I can remember about
customizing in xp.
Hove this helps anyone who needs the info.
