In the case of a conversation, when the group of messages comprising it are 
collapsed then only one message, the first or the last, is (or may be) 
visible.  When a group of messages is 'expanded', then every message in it 
is (or may be) visible.  You press right-arrow to - progressively - make all 
messages in a group or conversation visible.  You press left-arrow to - 
progressively - collapse the messages of that group or conversation. 
Sorting messages by conversation has the advantage that you don't have to 
listen to message headers you know you are not interested in.
