Subject: [JAWS-Users] Using Microphone

Dear List

I have just tried to connect a microphone to my new PC. Unfortunately the
computer is trying to be too clever for its own good. Instead of having a
mic in socket the Tex high definition audio driver simply recognises that
you have plugged in a device and apparently asks you to specify what
device it is and configures the ports for you.

Very clever but then not really so as the driver software appears to be
largely inaccessible to Jaws and seems quite difficult for even my sighted
daughter to come to terns with. The driver kept on insisting that the
microphone was a headphone. Why they could not have just left a mic socket I
do not know. There is something like 5 spare ports and I do not appear to be
able to use any of them. I could probably sort it out if the driver could be
read by Jaws but sadly not.

Anyway I am now considering buying a USB microphone to get around this
stupid and annoying RealTech audio feature. I have no experience of using
USB Microphones and wonder if I will be going from the frying pan to the
fire. Do I have to install drivers?
Would a USB microphone be accessible to Jaws.
Will I see the microphone in Sound Properties as mic in or line in or will
it appear as a another device? I will be using the microphone with
applications like GoldWave and Cdex to record speech in MP3. I have no
interest in speech recognition so this is not an issue.

Any suggestions as to a particular model which either does not need a
driver or where the driver is accessible to Jaws would be greatly
appreciated.

Using XP Pro SPA Jaws 8
