I would suggest that you use a utility from the Jaws User Program page. Mp3DirectCut or GoldWave will do the job. I think there are others.
Mp3DirectCut has a very good automatic pause detection which will enable the easy splitting of files. The pause detection is I think under the special menu and you then simply use save split under the file menu to split the files. You can select areas to split manually as well. I think there are some audio tutorials on mp3DirectCut also. I suggest you have a play first with Mp3DirectCut to see how you get on with what you want to do. Use control O to open the file you want to edit. Press space to toggle play and pause of the file. I think most of the commands you need are in the menu bar.
