Merry Christmas.

Perhaps the icons are in the Recycle bin?  Check there.  They can be 
restored using the File Restore feature there.  If not:  If this happened 
recently, a System Restore to a time when all of the items were on the 
desktop should fix it.  If you do get the Desktop Cleanup Wizard popping up, 
asking you do you want to get rid of rarely-used icons from the desktop?, 
tab to the No button and hit enter.  This Wizard may come up every 60 days 
or so.  One person's negative experience is not enough to construct a 
doomsday scenario around.

If you did a reboot & it's still not working,I think you have a big problem.
If you can check on your ram to see if you have enough or not.
A friend had the same problem that you said & another day her computer bit
the dust.
