As has already been stated, once you highlight the word you want to spell check, you would place the cursor at the beginning of the word, holding down the shift key, right arrow until you've highlighted the entire word. Once it's highlighted, press the F7 key, and the spell checker will check that word. Once it's done spellchecking that word, it will ask you if you want to check the rest of the document, at which point, you should select the no button.
