I find working on the actual desktop unpredictable. I have found it best to set a shortcut to the Desktop on the actual Desktop. If you then set a shortcut key for this like control + alt + D the Desktop will open in a normal Explorer window set to List or detail as you might prefer. Very much easier to navigate and should avoid the problems you experience.
To set shortcut. 1. windows key E to open Explorer. 2. Press Home to go to desktop. 3. Control + C to copy. 4. windows key + D to go back to desktop. 5. Press application key or shift F10 to open context menu. 6. Select paste shortcut. 7 Press application key or shift F10 again. 8 Select Properties. Of your desktop shortcut. 9. Tab to shortcut key feels. 10. Press the shortcut key you want - like Control + alt + D for example. 11. Tab to OK and life with the Desktop will forever more be simpler. My documents might be called 1 of so many one time, and 28 of so many another time; is it moving around my desktop? Also sometimes when I hit windows m and then try to hit a letter like m for my documents, it will act like it's reading an html page. For example, it will say there are no frames on this page. The people at FS were stumped when I called, but I had less information to give them than I do now. Any ideas what might be wrong. I'd really like to hear every desktop shortcut when I press the right letter.
