Judy, There are a number of things that drive the cost of any product. There are up-front costs that go into research and development before a product is ready to be sold to the customer. Then there are production, advertising and distribution costs which continue for the life of the product. The manufacturer adds up all of these costs and then divides it up by the potential number of customers. When you look at the customer base for a product like Microsoft Office verses JAWS, there are fewer potential JAWS users than Office users.
