Hi Adrian,

The problem I had was of my own creation, & that's why I knew exactly where
to go to get Jaws to start announcing the, Safe To Remove Hardware: The 'USB
Mass Storage Device' device can now be safely removed from the computer.,
dialog again. The culprit was what I explained in my original post. It
just took some experimentation to find which of the icons I changed the
status of in Taskbar properties to nail down the icon that was causing the,
Safe To Remove Hardware: The 'USB Mass Storage Device' device can now be
safely removed from the computer. , dialog to not be spoken by Jaws. The
Safely Remove Hardware icon was in the system tray, & wasn't the problem,
but an icon that I hid in Taskbar properties was what caused the problem of
Jaws not speaking the, Safe To Remove Hardware: The 'USB Mass Storage Device'
device can now be safely removed from the computer, dialog. Now, if that
explanation wasn't more difficult to comprehend than any of the legal lingo
you've read in your legal days, I just don't know how to make it any easier!
LOL

In all honesty, give me a call, & I'll show you exactly what I mean via your
Taskbar properties. We won't change anything, but it'll just be easier to
understand as I walk you through it.
Take care.
Mike

Jaws, A Possible Fix

Mike, here are notes I made to myself when I encountered the same problem
long ago. I'd try to have them make more sense, but I'm not experiencing the
problem and so can't try to replicate it in order to go through the steps
before posting this. I hope you can get somewhere with them.

System tray, JAWS can't read icon
You can cycle through the system tray and clock with Windows+b, then left
and right arrows. When JAWS speaks chevron, it is on an item that is
otherwise invisible to JAWS. I pressed applications key and got a serious of
options. Spacebar and enter on the icon did nothing.
If a message pops up while navigating, press the JAWS left mouse button.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Safe To Remove Hardware, Not Being Announced By Jaws,
A Possible Fix

Hi All,

Running Windows 7 Pro & Jaws 15 thru 18. I was hiding several icons in the
notification area of the Taskbar properties, & after doing so Jaws quit
announcing the Safe To Remove dialogue. The Safe To Remove icon was showing
in the system tray, but Jaws just wouldn't announce the Safe To Remove
dialogue after clicking on a drive I wanted to remove. Below is what I did
to fix it.

When attempting to remove drives from the system tray via the, Safe To
Remove Hardware icon, & Jaws doesn't make the Safe To Remove announcement, &
all your settings for sounds are correct try the following:
1. Open the Taskbar properties, tab to the, Notification Area Customize
button, & press the spacebar to open.
2. Tab to the, Windows host process (Rundll32) Combo box icon, & if the,
Hide Icon And Notifications, is highlighted this is probably the most likely
reason Jaws isn't announcing the Safe To Remove Hardware dialogue.
3. Arrow up / down & highlight either the, Show Icon In Notifications, or
the, Only Show Notifications option.
4. Tab to, Okay, press the spacebar, again tab to, Okay, press enter to save
& close.
This happened to me & doing the above steps fixed the problem.
Take care.
Mike
