Brian,

I'm sure you're right about the changes you describe here because, for a long
time, I avoided using the control-f search command in Word. It's still useful
to keep in mind the directions you lay out, and I'm saving them for future
reference.

Hello Adrian,

Yes, you are quite right! I didn't realize that when in the navigation pane
pressing spacebar still goes result to result and JAWS speaks the found result.
It seems to me that at one time using the navigation pane to find text didn't
work very well and most people were making the change I mentioned. Also, I
think at that time a person did have to use F6 and shift with f6 but not now.
The escape key also now takes focus back into the document pane. Also, the
JAWS find is a great alternative. For some reason, I thought it was limited to
only search what is shown on the screen at a given time. This isn't the case
either. Changing the CTRL F to apply to the EditFind command isn't really
necessary any more. Thanks for
pointing these things out.

Take care.

Brian,

This is useful information, as always, but it does seem a bit complicated.
When I do a control-f search, JAWS reads the current line as soon as the result
is found. It's critical not to press any key until JAWS has verbalized that
line, or else JAWS gives only the option to search for the next result, with an
indication of the total number of results for that search in the document.

Having heard the line of text, I have two options. Either I press the spacebar
to move to the next result or press escape to go to re-read and possibly edit
the text. As you explain, the control-f search doesn't land you directly in the
text field.

If I elected to stop the search to check that text but then decide to continue
searching for that same item, I press control-f again. The same search term is
still there, so I just press enter. I'm taken to the next instance of that
search term. Once again, the current line of text is verbalized, and I have the
same two choices: press escape to go into the text or press spacebar to resume
searching.

The alternative, of course, is a JAWS find, adding the JAWS key to control-f.
In this case, JAWS stays in the text when it finds a result, so you can edit
right away. To resume searching for the same term, press JAWS key-F3.

Each type of search, Microsoft's and JAWS's, has advantages.

I'm afraid this doesn't address John's concern that the escape key no longer
cancels his search operations. I don't have an answer for that.

I'm using Office 2010, JAWS 18 (last but one release) and Win7.

Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Print view in MS word

Hello John,

It is really best to work in print view when using Word. Keystrokes such as
Alt key with delete report the distance in inches between the cursor position
and the edge of the paper. As you tab you also hear the distance from the left
edge of the paper. When JAWS says that the cursor is one inch from the left,
this indicates there is a one-inch margin. Working in print view gives you a
lot better understanding of how your document will appear when printed.

In Word 2010, CTRL with F does not perform the traditional Find command and
take focus into the Find tab of the Find and Replace dialog box. CTRL with F
takes focus into the navigation pane. You can do a search in the navigation
pane and use the next button to go from result to result but to get into the
document to read the result you need to use shift key with F6.
After reviewing the result you can use F6 to go back into the navigation pane
and use the Next button again. In order to return the CTRL with F to launching
the Find and Replace dialog box you need to apply the keystroke to
the Editfind command.

1. Press Alt F to display the File tab of the ribbon.
2. Press Alt T to display Word Options.
3. Use down arrow key in the categories of options until you get to
Customize Ribbon.
4. Tab until you find the Customize button and use spacebar.
5. In the Categories list move focus to the Home Tab.
6. In the Commands list locate EditFind. You can press the letter E
and then use down arrow until you get to it. Press enter key.
7. Use the tab key to the Press New Shortcut Key box.
8. Press CTRL+F. A message in the box shows that the keystroke is
being used for a different command.
9. Tab to and press spacebar on the Assign button.
10. Tab to the Close button and use spacebar.
11. Tab to OK and press spacebar.

I am not sure but you might need to restart Word for the change to apply.

Take care.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Print view in MS word

List, having a couple of issues,

Running windows 10, Office 2010 and latest jaws 18 on a Toshiba laptop:

1. When I bring up a Word document, jaws announces the name of the document and
at the end says "print view"

Do we want to have documents in print view? Seems like there was a setting in
options to change this by checking or unchecking a check box with the space
bar. Unless I am remembering incorrectly, seems like print view had some issues
and we were advised to not use print view.

2. When I bring up the find dialogue with Control key plus letter F, after I
have done my search, I cannot get the dialogue to close so I can reload the
Find command to look for something else in the Word document. My sighted wife
says she has to click an X next to the name being searched to close the find
dialogue. Seems like we used to be able to use the "escape key" to dismiss the
find dialogue.

Thanks for any help.

John

That said, I have no problem using the Jaws find command of jaws key plus
control key and letter f.

Has the operation of the find function been changed? I used to use office 2003.
