Joanne,

First way to stop this is to stop Word putting the superscripts in in
the first place. Go to the Tools menu and choose AutoCorrect. On the
AutoFormat page, uncheck the "ordinals (1st) with superscript" checkbox.

Once they are in the document, you can either stop JAWS telling you
about them or you can change the formatting in Word so that they don't
appear. The Word route is easier, but you'll need to do it for each
document.

In JAWS, go to the Configuration Manager with Insert + 6, open the Set
Options menu and choose Speech and Sounds manager. Tab to the Edit
Current Scheme button and press it. Move to the Attributes page with
Control + Tab, then DownArrow to Subscript, Tab once and DownArrow to
Ignore. Shift + Tab back into the list of attributes, DownArrow to
Superscript, then Tab once and DownArrow to Ignore again. Press Enter,
then Tab to the Save Current Scheme and press it, then Tab to the OK
button and press it. Then close the Configuration Manager.

In Word, check whether the first character of the document is
superscript. Assuming it isn't, select the entire document with Control
+ A, then Control + D to go into the Font dialogue and press Alt + P
twice. Then press Enter to close the dialogue and unselect the text. If
the first character of the document is superscript, then do the same but
only press Alt + P once.

Steve

Subject: [JAWS-Users] jaws saying super-script in word and sometimes
emails

Is there a way to stop Jaws from saying super-script right in the middle
of words? For instance, when I type the word 4th or 3rd, etc., in
Microsoft Word Jaws says 4 beginning super-script TH end super-script.
I don't know what a super-script is but it's annoying hearing it
constantly read, and just wondered how to make one of these on my
keyboard so I could maybe get the dictionary to change what it says when
I run across it in the future. Or is there some way to turn this off
somewhere so it isn't read? Thanks for any help.
