Hi Mike!
As it turns out, the probable reason partition assistant didn't work was
because my laptop's BIOS isn't smart enough to bypass non bootable media
in devices in the boot order. I had the new hard drive hooked up to a
USB port, and of course it wasn't bootable because it was blank.
Unfortunately I couldn't simply unplug it so that the pre Windows part
of partition assistant could run because then it wouldn't find the
target drive. So I changed my boot order so that the internal hard drive
is the first device. So now it might actually work.
