I use winamp too; I thought of suggesting that but I'm not sure it's really workable with a lot of the modern streaming options, and the OP wanted something that worked well with online radio etc. Having said that, I successfully used such services with Winamp for years previously. Nowadays I mostly just play stuff from my own library.
VLC is great for video formats, but although some claim otherwise, I'm just not as happy with its playlist options as I am with Winamp's. Plus, it's equaliser is very inconvenient to set.
