Hi,

These hosts are different underlying structures for managing audio.
MME is a legacy one that you should only use in case of problems with 
DirectSound in your particular combination of Windows version and audio driver. 
WASAPI was introduced in Windows Vista and is particularly helpful if your 
audio driver or hardware disallow recording audio from the computer (stereo mix 
or similar input).
This is a quick explanation, but theres a good Audacity tutorial on this topic.
