Insert+6 to invoke Settings Center, then Ctrl+Shift+D to ensure that it's modifying the default configuration rather than an application-specific configuration, then search for "status". "Placement of status cells" is the option you need. Press space bar until you've changed the setting to "none", then close the Settings Center.
