I have never used 18. Didn't like it. This is 2018. I'm guessing it's not
there because it's imbedded text in an image.

check your jaws version again.
this option is not available with version 18.0
only with version 2018.
they are not the same version.
you do not open the files with adobe.
you highlight them from the file list then open a context menu on them
to use the Recognize with JAWS option. but only with jaws 2018.

none of this is needed with jaws 2018.
its easier to just go to the file and open a context menu on it and use
recognize with jaws. without haveing to open it in adobe reader.

What version of JAWS? You need to have the document open in Adobe, then
remember that the convenient OCR keystrokes are:
Insert+Spacebar
Release to hear a click sound
Press the letter O
release
Press the letter D
release
You should hear a response that it is working
I recall that this was available in JAWS 17 or later.

That's not working. It still continues to say empty document and no other
window opens.
The particular pdf does contain images and print. Would that make a
difference?

Hi Vicki,
After opening the "empty" pdf, hit JAWSKey+spacebar followed by "od"
(without the quotes).
This invokes the OCR document scan. It will take a bit of time for the
scan, depending on the size of your document.
The result is then displayed in the virtual viewer.
If you wanted to, once the scan is complete, you could select all of the
text, copy it to the clipboard and paste it into a text file.
