Alt O, then C, then W will give you an edit field where you can change the 
width of the column.

Hello,

"Alt, then c then w then a for auto adjust." Doesn't work for me.

This is how I do it.

Hit Control+SpaceBar to select the entire column
Hit Alt+h for the Home menu
Hit down-arrow until I hear "Cells"
Hit Right arrow to open the "cell" sub-menu
hit down-arrow until I hear "Format button dropdown Has Popup"
Press Enter to open the popup
Press down-arrow until I see what I'm looking for.

Column Width for a fixed column width or Auto Fit Column width.
