Interesting, I never had the reason to use word count. I am using word 2003, 
xp home sp2, and the new jaws 9.
I brought up a small word document and with word count did get the following 
information. I did need to use the jaws cursor to read it.
Word Count
Statistics:
Pages  1
Words  105
Characters (no spaces)  477
Characters (with spaces)   581
Paragraphs 2
Lines 8
not checked Include footnotes and endnotes
Show Toolbar Close
Also the say prior and next word worked with no problems.

Hello Liz,
I just tried this and I had the same problem.  Another problem I have is
when moving word to word using insert plus right arrow it wants to either
skip words or it wants to say the word two or three times.
