Yeah...notepad doesn't save any backups ... not even in temporary files folders. If you're worried about this happening again, it may be best to write your important documents in, say, mS Word, which has the ability to save a backup/recovery file as often as you want, in the background.
You could look into a program called notepad++. It's like a super-notepad made specifically with developers/programmers in mind, and has a lot of features and even add-ons.
