Imo it's always good to have alternatives. Some people don't want an apple device, and others don't want to be bothered with Skype. International phone plans are not cheap and have to justify their cost in extensive use to be worthwhile. Different VOIP alternatives are a very good thing, and hopefully not going anywhere.
That said, Whatsapp is a facebook product. It's come under scrutiny recently because of the privacy scandal that's been in the news the last couple of weeks, along with instagram.
