Josh, I think I was mistaken about the quick settings menu item. There, spelling options only enable you to select how spelling is reported, not whether to report it at all.
Instead, the answer is in the Chrome menu. I don't really understand how it works, but I can get you to the option: Alt-f for file menu, then s for settings Tab like a madman until you land on "Advanced."
