Hello Mitch,

You can easily access AVAST features and functions through the system tray.
Use insert-F11 to bring up the system tray. Press A until you hear "AVAST
on-access scanner", tab once and press enter on the right mouse button
choice. There are two menu AVAST icons in the system tray so be sure to use
the "On access scanner" choice. Use down arrow to the choice for program
settings and press enter. There will be a list of types of settings that
you can use down arrow to move to, and then tab to the choices.

I personally like the simple user interface that a lot of people seem to be
abandoning. Although going to the advanced user interface gives you more of
a dialog-box style program to use tab and shift-tab in, I still find using
the simple user interface easier.

If you use the simple user interface, when you use the start scan choice
from the system tray and after AVAST does the memory scan, (which you can
cancel), you will hear something like "dummy checkbox." If you press the
applications key at this point you will be able to set the scanning
parameters quite easily as all choices are set up in a menu layer structure.
The "start scan" choice has a submenu so right arrow into it, right arrow
again to get into choosing the area to scan. use down arrow to pick the
area to scan and press enter. Press applications key again and you will get
the start scan menu. use right arrow and then down arrow to get a submenu
for scanning level. You can use right arrow there and then up or down arrow
to choose whether it should be a quick or complete scan. After you pick the
scanning area use the applications key and then use right arrow when you get
the start scan menu. use down arrow to the start scan choice and press
enter. In the same "start scan" menu there is a choice for scheduling a
boot time scan. you might have agreed to a boot time scan if AVAST found
something on your system that had to be deleted outside of Windows. Also in
the start scan submenu there is a menu choice for starting a scan when the
computer boots.

Take care.

Brian Lee
