Hi CJ,
My suggestion to you, would be this:
If you are in the habit of performing routine maintenance on your computer,
then include updating your security software, and scanning the computer
during the maintenance.
I do not allow any software to update or scan automatically on my systems.
The reason for this is,that I don't know what I may be useing the computer
for at any given time,
and I do not want a program to decide to update, or run a scan, while I'm in
the middle of a task.
Now, having said that, if you still wish to schedule automatic scans, then
your choices are limited as far as free programs go.
Avast, anti-virus,free version, requires manual scans, as does the last
version of Spy-bot search and destroy, anti-spyware.
If you don't mind spending some money for security, you can get more options
for automatic updating, and scanning.
Along those lines, the best security suite I have had used in the past 3
years, is TrendMicro Internet Security 2006,
and from what I understand, they will be supporting that version thru 2009.
They hope to have a more screen-reader interface in the 2010 release.
Keep in mind, that no 2 systems are the same, therefore not everyone will
experience the exact same results.
Eset Smart Security, will probably work well for most users, however, it did
not
seem to get along with my particular network configuration.
Bit Defender, left me wondering what method I was supposed to use to
navigate the interface
and was removed from my system in pretty short order.
Keep in mind also, that you generally get what you pay for.
If I decide to purchase a suite again, it will be TrendMicro2006
I run a clean systemon both boxes, so I don't load alot of security software
on them.
A good security suite, will include a software firewall, anti-virus, anti
spyware, and web-surfing protection.
If you want more detailed info about any of the ones I have mentioned, give
me a shout.
HTH,

Subject: [JAWS-Users] anti virus and spy program question

I need a good anti virus and spy ware program that I can set up to
automatically run each day. The ones I've had in the past, meaning before
my computer crash, were ones that my husband had to come in and look at, in
other words, not jaws friendly. Which of the programs on the jaws users
page would you recommend? Thanks for any and all opinions, that means you
Rick.
