GoldWave records initially in .WAV  format.  However, it is very easy to 
store the file in .MP3   as you have described.  Wave files are very easy to 
edit, change or  modify.  Once you have the project completed, you can 
easily access the File menu and choose .MP3   as the type of medium you 
want.  GoldWave doesn't save that file anywhere until you tell it to.  It 
records in the wave format for the reasons I have indicated above.
