In my opinion, Avira is the best choice.
But by configure, I recommend you the following:
Go to system tray.
Select avira, and press enter.
Select configure antivir.
Check expert mode.
Select from the tree view scanner, and tab, if you arrive:
file scanning is extended, go twice up, and select all files.
Select ignore offline files, uncheck it, select scan foor rootkits, check
it.
In the tree view, select archives, but open the search tree.
UUncheck recursion depth.
Select heuristic.
Get the win32 heuristic on highest detection level.
Make it by guard as well, but by search, select scan for archives, and the
max checkboxes, these 3 peace, uncheck.
God bless, and stay avay from viruses with avira, I make it too!
But, yes, it can be, it is an automatic scan.
But if you want to scan your system, route jaws cursor to pc cursor, and if
it says:
Last complete system scan, and the time, and next to says scan system now,
route jaws cursor to scan system now, and a left mouse button click, with
jfw cursor, allow scanning.
