Let's start with the basics. Do you have paper in the printer? Is the paper loaded properly? What is the status of the ink or toner? How often do you print? If you have an ink jet printer, and you haven't printed in a while, the cartridge may have dried out, and may need to be replaced.

Hit control P and tab through the various options until you come to the one that should announce what printer you have. If that printer is not listed, there is your problem perhaps; the computer is not recognizing your printer. Also, make sure all cabling is tight and that the cabling is in the correct place.
