Using Windows XP. What I (usually) do is: Windows key, f, f, which activates the Files & Folders dialogue.
-- Then tab twice or until I get to the All Files & Folders button. -- Then spacebar or enter. -- Then, as prompted, type the search string you're looking for. -- That done, press enter, and give it about ten seconds to find what you want. (The length of time can vary, depending on how many instances there are of what exactly you searched for.) You might also press tab and/or shift-tab, if the list of results does not appear in focus.
