Oops, sorry Devona, I meant to say shift-control instead of alt-control. 
Here's Maria's email that explains it better.

Actually, control K just makes a temporary bookmark, which erases when
closing a site.
Shift plus control Plus K allows for making permanent bookmarks.
Pressing  shift plus control plus K again brings up a list of bookmarks that
can then be manipulated as you'd like,including deletion.
