Leonard,
It sounds like an AutoFormat option is turned on. From the Tools menu,
choose AutoCorrect. Press Control + Tab to move to the AutoFormat as you
Type page. DownArrow to Border Lines and I think it will be checked.
Uncheck it and your problem will go away.
With the Border Lines checkbox checked, Word will substitute borders
beneath the preceding paragraph when you type certain sequences of
characters in a paragraph of their own and then press Enter. Three or
more asterisks are changed to a dotted bottom border; to check this,
after typing three asterisks and then pressing Enter, press UpArrow to
get back to the paragraph and press Alt + Shift + B to get JAWS to
describe the borders.

Maybe: Word or other programs may use the star unspaced and repeated

or more) symbol as a code for something - think of the hiding of
passwords,
even. However, you could also do it as follows. leave a number of
blank
linds, and on one of these blanks type **** . Then down-arrow to the
last
blank line. I believe you could also do ** ** [leaving a space between
the
stars]. In other words, you can have as many stars as you want provided
that you put space after every couple.

That solution crossed my mind but I was so frustrated I could not get

situation to correct itself after trying so hard I didn't reconsider it

I am using ms word 2003. I have created a file of various articles
from
newspapers in order to read them later. However, when I try to
separate
the
articles with **** symbol, soon as I finish typing the symbols and hit
the
enter key the *** symbols get erased. I've unchecked several items in
the
spelling and grammar tab and "typing replaces selection in the edit
tab,
closed the document but the problem still exists.
