The short answer to your question is Yes, it would save the changes just for that particular document. If you wish to make 12 point the new default setting, try the following steps:
1. From an open document press shift control and P to open the font dialogue box. 2. Quickly type 12 or use your arrow keys to choose the desired font size. 3. Now, press alt and D or tab across to the "default option " and press space bar to check this box. 4. Tab across to the OK button and hit enter. 5. Close and reload Word and now your default font size should be 12 point.
