I also believe Thunder has ceased development whereas NVDA is still being
developed even if I speak.

Thunder is very limited compared to JAWS. It can read email using Outlook
Express, browse the web using its own accessible browser called WebbIE
(but not Internet Explorer) and navigate around the desktop,start menu and
control panel. It has some limited functionality with MS Word, but is
nowhere near as comprehensive as JAWS. But of course, its free, so it's
worth checking out. NVDA is a better choice if you're looking for a free
screen reader and your needs are limited to email, web browsing and word
processing.
