Hello Don,
The AVS Video Converter 6 will convert a movie in a DVD folder to .AVI. It
is not a free program though. The free version of the program will convert
the entire movie but will include a watermark in the middle of the movie.
If you are just listening to the movie this probably is all right. However,
if you or others watch it on your computer then you probably don't want to
be viewing a watermark. It is easy to browse for the input file (usually
the first IFO file in the video_ts folder) and open it. A person can then
use the tab key a few times and get to the edit box where you can change the
output name of your file from "untitled" to what you want it to be. A
person needs to route JAWS to PC and move to the third line from the top of
the interface to find the choices of file type to convert to. A mouse click
simulation is needed on the choice. The choices are to AVI, to DVD, to MP4,
to MPEG, to WMV, to VOB, to 3GP, to flash and to RM. After making the
choice you can tab to a drop down list of profiles for video and audio.
Sometimes, the JAWS screen refresh has to be used for JAWS to read the
different file types that can be used that are shown on the third row from
the top of the window. You can find the "convert now" button using the tab
key. I found this to be quite an easy way to convert although it takes some
time. The compressed file still has good quality in both audio and video.
The site for the program is:
www.avs4you.com
If you find the first .IFO file in a DVD folder and press enter on it, the
entire movie will play. This is one way to play the movie without
compressing it, but of course the DVD folder is far larger than a compressed
AVI file.
I have been told that AVI.NET, Fair Use Wizard, and Auto GK are free
programs that will allow AVI creation from a DVD folder, but I couldn't seem
to get it done. However, the AVS Video Converter worked well and was quite
easy to use with JAWS.
Take care.

Do you have a recommendation of a program to convert / encode the DVD
folder to a single file? Perhaps an AVI, MP4, or whatever. I am not very
concerned about which, except good compression is helpful. Due to my
other physical handicaps, it is difficult for me to locate disks. I would
like to have a handy copy of my favorites always available on my computer.

Hello Stewart,
DVD Flick is a DVD authoring tool and not DVD copying software. However,
there is a good DVD copying program that is free called "DVDFab HD
Decrypter." You can choose to copy the entire DVD or just the main
movie. You can also use it to copy disks from XBox 360, Play Station 3
and cell phones, although I have never done so. All you need to do to
copy a full DVD is insert the DVD, in DVDFab HD Decrypter click on the
""full disk" and activate the start button in the program. You will need
to use the JAWS cursor to find the "full disk" choice and use the
keyboard to simulate a left mouse button click on the choice. You can
use the tab key to find (and change if desired) the destination folder
and the start button. The entire DVD will be ripped into a folder on the
hard drive. The folder will contain an audio_TS and a Video_TS folder.
You can then use a program like Image Burn to burn the DVD folder to a
new DVD disk.
In Image Burn you need to choose the "build" choice from the mode menu.
When you do so, the "output menu" will show on the menu bar. The choice
that should be checked in the output menu is "device." With mode set to
"build" and output to "device" you can use the "browse for a folder"
choice under the file menu. You should browse to the folder that
contains the audio_TS and video_ts folders and open it. With a blank DVD
in the drive you can then choose "write" from the file menu and follow
the prompts. Here are links on Sendspace for the two programs if you are
interested.

Write me off list if you would like to discuss the programs further.
Take care.

Hello Don,
DVD Flick is a good DVD authoring program and is free. You can use the
tab key to move between controls like "add file", "change destination",
etc. However, when using it a person needs to use the JAWS refresh
command to make the toolbar visible and then use the JAWS cursor and
simulate mouse clicks to activate the various buttons like "project
settings" and "convert to DVD." The JAWS cursor has to also be used in
the settings dialog where the tabs are shown vertically and with lines
of other information between them. So, it does take a while to learn
how to use the program. Although it is a DVD authoring program, if a
person goes into the project settings and picks the burning tab, there
is a checkbox that can be checked to tell the program to burn the
project after encoding. A person can use the program with JAWS, but it
might take a while to figure out. Below are a couple messages I sent
to another member of the list a while ago about DVD authoring and
burning programs.
"If you are using Vista Home Premium or Ultimate then your computer has
Windows DVD Maker. I have found that it uses pretty standard types of
controls and is quite accessible. It handles quite a few of the video
file
formats such as .AVI, .MPG, .WMV and others. You can find it under the
"all
programs" menu.
If you don't have Vista Home Premium or Ultimate you can download and
install a couple free programs. DVD Flick is a program that will
convert
many of the common video formats and will create a DVD folder that can
be
burned to a DVD. The folder it creates will contain subfolders, (an
audio_TS and a video_TS), which are the folders that need to be in a
folder
when burning to a DVD. The video_TS contains the .BUP, .IFO and .VOB
files.
The audio_TS will be empty but is required by the program. A good free
program that will burn the folder once created by DVD Flick is Image
Burn.
You simply set the mode to "build" and choose the output as being the
DVD
recorder, open the folder to be burned and choose "write" from the file
menu.
The above programs are quite accessible, but a person needs to use the
JAWS
cursor and simulate mouse clicks. AVS Video Converter can be purchased
and
used to both convert video files and create a DVD from them. I have
tried
it and was able to use all the features, but again, I had to use the
JAWS
cursor and left mouse clicks quite a bit. The demo version leaves a
watermark right in the center of the movie, so if you wanted to use the
program without the watermark then you would want to buy it."
"You can buy a program from www.avs4you.com that does the entire
process of converting and burning. If you want to spend the money then
it might be a better choice. If you have Nero or Roxio then you can
also usually convert and burn the DVD with those programs."
Take care.
