Fred, To hide a column or group of columns:
Select the column by pressing ctrl-space bar. If you want to hide multiple, adjacent columns, hold down the shift key and use the right or left arrow keys to select additional columns. Press alt-o to bring up the Format menu and select "Columns." >From that ment, select hide. Unhiding columns can be a little tricky. I have found that selecting the column on either side of the hidden ones and then selecting the format columns menu and pressing unhide works.
